Drift ...
“The number of boards that you vary from straight in your approach to the foul line. For example, if you place the inside edge of your slide foot on the 15th board on the approach, but your inside edge slides on the 12th board at the foul line, you have a 3-board inward drift. “
International champion Tore Torgenson is an example of a bowler with drift in his approach.
Drifting is any sideways movement in your approach.
Drifting is not a bad thing, if (like everything else) it is CONSISTANT.
Let’s not get carried away. By consistant we mean a high degree of consistancy.
Just like hitting the target or the pocket, no one does it perfectly every time.
Some games a player’s drift may be 4 boards, in other games it may be 2 boards; yet he’s bowling consistantly high games. Maybe this bowler has been adjusting his speed for differing lane conditions.
Drift is likely to be more pronounced in a slow approach than a fast one.
Your approach brings you to the foul line … at a point and in a direction that brings your swing and release in-line with your target and intended line on the lane.
Drift can play a part both in the bowler’s approach, and as an aid to creating the bowler’s rhythm (some might call it a little dance).
